Statement from leaders of three national dental societies:

The age of mercury in dentistry is over.

The end of mercury-based fillings (wrongly called “silver”) has arrived for several reasons:

(1) They are not needed. Resin, porcelain, or other materials can handle each and every cavity.

(2) Mercury is an environmental and public health disaster. Dentists must stop contributing to the problem, and must instead start working on the solution.

(3) The health risks of mercury amalgam is a subject of intense controversy. We believe they are unsafe. Others may disagree, but the rule of precaution should govern in health care. Amalgam fillings are a toxic product going into the mouth, and a hazardous waste when removed.

(4) Consumer protection is important here – consumers have been fooled for too long into thinking these fillings are mainly silver. They are not. Their main component is mercury.

To repeat: Not a single Connecticut child with a cavity need go without a filling when mercury/silver fillings are banned.
