ABC swindles viewers

12 July 2007 - Tonight’s screening of the widely discredited documentary ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ is a sad indictment on the ABC, said the Queensland Greens today.

“The fact that the ABC needs to be broadcasting lies about climate change in an effort to appear unbiased shows the climate of fear that exists under the Howard government” said Australian Greens lead Senate candidate for Queensland, environmental lawyer Larissa Waters.

“The need for unbiased reporting does not excuse the ABC from their duty to inform viewers, not mislead them on what is the most crucial issue facing our society.

“The documentary is itself a swindle, and has been widely criticised by scientists with relevant expertise as distorting data and cherry picking figures to the extent that it is fraudulent.

“We need real action on climate change, not hot air questioning whether humanity really does need to change how we live.

“The Greens are committed to ratifying Kyoto, introducing targets for greenhouse gas reduction of 30% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 as thousands of international scientists recommend, and reaping the economic benefits of a transition to job-rich clean, renewable energy sources.

“John Howard and the Coalition are still climate change denialists – they refuse to set a target to reduce our carbon emissions and are all smoke and mirrors about the details of a carbon trading scheme that may one day be introduced.

“Kevin Rudd and the ALP have set a target that is too low and too far into the future to have any chance of constraining climate change to a level where our Great Barrier Reef will survive.

“Only the Greens are serious climate change. People must vote Green in the Senate this year to protect our way of life from dangerous climate change” said Ms Waters.
